1. Classification of Aluminium Grades
Aluminium grades can be broadly classified into two categories: non-heat-treatable and heat-treatable. Additionally, they are often categorized based on their primary alloying elements, such as copper, magnesium, silicon, manganese, and zinc.
Non-Heat-Treatable Grades
These grades cannot be strengthened significantly through heat treatment processes like annealing or quenching. They derive their strength primarily from cold working or the addition of alloying elements. Common non-heat-treatable grades include:
1000 Series: Pure aluminium with a minimum of 99% aluminium content. Known for excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, formability, and corrosion resistance. Common alloys include 1050, 1060, and 1100.
3000 Series: Aluminium-manganese alloys, known for good formability, corrosion resistance, and moderate strength.
5000 Series: Aluminium-magnesium alloys, offering good corrosion resistance, weldability, and moderate strength. Widely used in marine and architectural applications.
Heat-Treatable Grades
These grades can be significantly strengthened through heat treatment processes like solution heat treatment and aging. Common heat-treatable grades include:
2000 Series: Aluminium-copper alloys, known for high strength and good machinability. However, they are less corrosion-resistant than other grades.
6000 Series: Aluminium-magnesium-silicon alloys, offering a good balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and formability. Widely used in automotive and aerospace applications.
7000 Series: Aluminium-zinc alloys, renowned for their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. They are used in high-performance applications requiring maximum strength.
