Aluminum profile, it is different section shapes aluminum products through aluminum extrusion process. From raw material-aluminum ingot, after hot melting, get aluminum billets, and then finish aluminum extrusion process through porthole die or flat die, can get different shape aluminum products.
What is Aluminum Profile
Aluminum profiles are products born from aluminum alloys that are transformed into shaped objects through the extrusion process. Aluminum's unique combination of physical characteristics mostly depends on this process. Aluminum extrusions are used in several fields because this metal is: Strong and stable.
Benefits of Aluminum Profile
Lightweight characteristic
Aluminum profiles are often easy to handle relative to other potential options with aluminum having approximately one-third the weight of steel, iron, copper, and brass. When weight reduction is a priority for applications that involve moving parts or transportation, aluminum extrusions are an attractive option.
Resilience
Aluminum and aluminum profiles are flexible and strong. They offer considerable resiliency, having the ability to spring back from impact loads and flex under other loads, making them particularly useful as extruded parts for crash management systems in automobiles.
High strength-to-weight ratio
Aluminum profiles consist of a unique combination of low weight and high strength, making them ideal in applications where supporting heavy loads and minimizing weight is important, such as in bridges, truck trailers, and aerospace designs.
Corrosion resistance
Aluminum profiles stock is highly corrosion resistant. The surface of aluminum is protected naturally through oxidation, which prevents rust. This natural protection can be enhanced by anodization or other finishing processes.
Excellent thermal conductors
Aluminum and aluminum profiles conduct cold and heat more efficiently than other metals in terms of their weight and overall cost. This makes extrusion ideal for applications involving heat dissipation or heat exchangers. The design flexibility offered with extrusions permit designers to optimize heat dissipation in various components, including housings.
Excellent electrical conductor
Aluminum has twice the conductivity as copper when compared pound for pound. As a result, aluminum profiles are highly cost-effective for bus bar distribution parts and electrical connectors.
Non-sparking
Aluminum is a non-sparking metal and as such aluminum profiles are ideal for applications that involve highly flammable environments or explosive materials.
Nontoxic and noncombustible
Even in exceptionally high temperatures, aluminum does not emit toxic fumes and it also does not burn.
Non-magnetic
Because aluminum does not develop a magnetic charge, aluminum profiles products are ideal for use in high-voltage applications in addition to electronics (where magnetic fields are often involved).
Seamless construction
The aluminum extrusion process allows the creation of complex shapes that do not require mechanical connections. This results in the development of profiles that are often stronger than mechanically joined assemblies and also less prone to leaking or loosening over time.
Reflective
Aluminum profiles and parts may be given surface treatments that create high reflectance, a property that is advantageous for applications involving lighting or where it is necessary to protect certain areas from light, infrared radiation, or radio waves.
Easily tailored to customized requirements
Aluminum profiles are preferred for the design of many products because of the ability to design custom profiles that meet various aesthetic, functional, and manufacturability requirements. Creating a custom Aluminum profile is also very cost effective when comparing to machining a block to the same design.
Easy fabrication and assembly
Various fabrication processes are used in the production of aluminum profile and custom assemblies and components. When aluminum profiles are effectively designed, the fabrication that follows is often greatly simplified.
Fast-to-market
Aluminum profiles are generally available with short lead times, which means designers can opt for optimized designs instead of settling for standard aluminum extrusions stock available in catalogs. This facilitates the development of prototypes, testing, and new product launches.
Recyclable and reusable
Aluminum may be recycled over and over again without a reduction in its properties. Often times, aluminum extrusion shapes are produced using a high percentage of recycled content without negatively affecting the end product’s functionality or aesthetics. There is a considerable market for scrap aluminum. Any aluminum piece that has reached the end of its service life may be recycled for eventual reuse.
Types of Aluminum Profile
Hollow beam
Hollow aluminum profiles are not designed with specific cross-sections. Instead, they come in a wide range of shapes with sub-classification for each profile. From rectangular beams, hollow top or bottom to square-shaped hollo beam profiles, these profiles are used to make the interior lightweight and strong. These extrusion profiles are used for constructional applications, industrial fixtures, horizontal support, etc.
Single radius profile
Single-radius aluminum profiles or SD profiles have a curved back and two straight surges making a quarter circle. Also come in solid, semi-solid, and hollow application requirements. They make the best choice for window frames and interiors. SD profiles are ideal for all weather and environments with sliding functionality and weather resistance.
L-shaped aluminum extrusion profile
L-shaped extrusion profiles are the simplest extruded form of aluminum used for various reinforcement purposes, construction projects, and multiple angles.
T slot aluminum extrusion profile
T-slot aluminum profiles are used to assemble and reassemble as per the structural requirement. The ability to add connection is considered the most popular construction and electrical systems profile. T-slot aluminum profiles are categorized into different extrusion series depending on the requirements. Most of the series is named by the size number. For instance, a 1-inch extrusion is called a 10-series, 1.5 inches extrusion is known as 15 series aluminum extrusion profile, and so on. Most industry experts suggest that 15 series aluminum profiles are ideal for manufacturing needs.
Application of Aluminum Profile

Architecture and construction
This category of applications ranges from railings and balustrades to building facades and bleachers. Stiff and lightweight aluminum section is ideal for applications like canopies where the structure can’t weigh much but must handle a load. (High stiffness means you need less of it, which translates to more weight-saving.) It’s also used for suspended ceilings and in walls.
Display equipment
Almost every stand you’ve ever seen at a trade show or exhibition was constructed with extruded material. That’s because extruded section can be designed so pieces interlock, making assembly quick and easy. It’s easy to move around too, and it can be finished any number of ways for an attractive and durable appearance.
Electrical systems
As it’s a good conductor, extruded aluminum is sometimes used for busbars and related electrical equipment. Another application is in lighting. Modern LED fixtures in particular can have thermal management challenges. Aluminum extruded with fins makes an excellent radiator or heat exchanger, is easily mounted to and colored, and doesn’t weigh too much when mounted overhead.
Industrial
Walk through any factory, (ours included,) and you’re almost guaranteed to see aluminum extrusion being put to work. It’s the material of choice for equipment like workbenches, inspection tables and carts because it’s easy to cut and drill, lightweight yet stiff, and good value-for-money. It also has the added attraction of being extendible: if a workbench needs modifying that’s quickly done.
Transportation
Weight and lightweighting are big concerns in transportation. Aerospace is an obvious example, but then there are automotive applications like trailers. Keeping trailer weight low lets the tow vehicle expend more torque on hauling stuff and less on moving the trailer itself. Note that this applies as much to horse and boat trailers as it does to 53’ semi trailers.
Prepare extrusion die
The first step is to make a round-shaped die or use an existing one if available. Preheat the die to precisely 450-500ᵒC before initiating the extrusion process. This helps to ensure that the metal passes through evenly and maximizes the die’s longevity. You can load the die into the extrusion press after the preheating procedure.
Pre-heat aluminum billet
The next thing is to cut the cylindrical billet from a stretched log of material, then preheat the billet in an oven to 400-500ᵒC. This technique prepares the billet, making it malleable for the operation. It ensures that it is not molten.
Move the billet to the extrusion press
Transfer the billet into the press mechanically after preheating it. However, add lubricant to it before filling the billet into the press. In addition, ensure to put a release agent to the extrusion ram. Consequently, this helps to prevent the billet and ram from joining together.
Press-up extruded material against the die
The aluminum material that fills the container’s walls gets pressed against the extrusion die. You need to apply pressure to the material continuously. Hence, the extruded material emerges through the die opening fully formed.
Quench the extrusion
A puller grasps the extrusion, holding it in place after exiting the press. It safeguards the extrusion as it leaves the press while the alloy undergoes a “quenching” process as it moves along the table. The profile cools off evenly with a full water bath or fan.
Shear the extrusion to the table length
Once the aluminum extrusion makes the total table length, use a hot saw to shear it. However, note that temperature is essential at each step of the extrusion method. Despite the quenching process, the extrusion is not always fully cooled off yet.
Cool extrusion to room temperature
After completing the shearing process, move the extrusions to a cooling plain from the runout table. The profiles remain there till they achieve room temperature. As soon as they reach room temperature, stretching begins.
Transfer extrusions to the stretcher and stretch them into alignment
At this stage, you will discover certain twists in the shape of the extruded aluminum that needs correcting. It would help if you had a stretcher to repair these twists. Hold each profile manually at different ends while pulling them till they are entirely straight. This procedure helps to adjust the extrusion to the desired specification.
Transfer extrusion to the finish to the finish saw and cut them to length
At this stage, when the extrusions are fully straightened and work hardened, you can now move them to the saw table. The next thing is for you to cut the extrusions into desired lengths. These lengths are usually between 8-21 feet. Move these extrusions to the oven for aging to the proper temper (T6 or T5) after completing the sawing process.
Carry out secondary operations (heat treatment, fabrication, & surface finishing)
Upon completion of the extrusion process, you can enhance the properties of these profiles by treating them with heat. After the heat treatment, consider fabricating the extrusions if there are dimensions that need correction. In addition, adding surface finishes helps to enhance the aesthetic appearance and corrosion resistance properties of the extruded aluminum.
How to Maintain Aluminum Profile
Choice of cleaning agent
The surface treatment and coating of aluminum profiles have a great influence on its corrosion and wear resistance. Cleaning agents containing acid-base components should be avoided when choosing cleaning agents, as they may damage the treatment and coating of the surface of aluminum profiles. It is recommended to use a soft cloth and a neutral detergent such as water and soapy water.
Storage and placement
Aluminum profiles should be stored and placed to avoid moisture, dryness, direct sunlight and polluting the environment. At the same time, the storage and placement site should be flat and unobstructed to avoid damage such as deformation and bending of aluminum profiles during storage. It is recommended to place the aluminum profile in a dry, ventilated, free of direct sunlight and use a mat or wooden frame to isolate the aluminum profile from direct contact with the ground or storage area to avoid friction or corrosion.
Maintenance of fasteners
Aluminum profiles need to be regularly checked for looseness during use. If the fasteners are found to be loose or damaged, they should be treated and repaired in time to avoid problems such as deformation, bending or corrosion of aluminum profiles.
Surface protection
Aluminum profiles need surface protection during use to enhance their corrosion resistance and wear resistance. Protective coatings such as varnishes, acrylic coatings, etc. can be used to protect the surface of aluminum profiles.
Regular inspection
Aluminum profiles need to be regularly checked during use, including whether the surface is damaged, deformed, whether the fasteners are loose, etc. If a problem is found, it should be dealt with and repaired in time to avoid the problem from expanding.
