5052 Aluminum Coil

5052 Aluminum Coil

5052 Aluminum Coil is a widely used aluminum alloy product belonging to the 5000 series. It is primarily an aluminum-magnesium alloy, with magnesium being the main alloying element, typically ranging from 3% to 5% by weight. This alloy is known for its exceptional properties, making it suitable for various applications across multiple industries.

5052 aluminum alloy nominally contains 2.5% magnesium, 0.25% chromium, and has good processability, medium static strength, high fatigue strength, good weldability and very good corrosion resistance, especially in marine atmosphere. It also has low density and excellent thermal conductivity similar to other aluminum alloys. Alloy 5052 can be hardened by cold work and cannot be heat treated to achieve higher strengths. Since the alloy ages naturally at room temperature immediately after cold working, all flat mill products are stabilized to provide consistent properties. This is usually achieved by a stabilizing heat treatment, either at a low temperature or by heat introduced during rolling, thereby producing the H3x state.

This grade is used in a wide range of atmospheric environments including food and construction applications as well as many marine environments. The magnesium content is low enough not to suffer from stress corrosion cracking, which can affect alloys containing more than about 3.5% magnesium. Alloy 5052 is also used in consumer electronics housings, laptops and televisions.

How strong is 5052 aluminum

5052 aluminum is stronger than many other alloys. Mechanical properties such as yield strength and tensile strength indicate this quality. 5052 aluminum is less likely to break under tension (tensile strength) and requires greater stress to permanently deform (yield strength).

Different tempering conditions change the mechanical properties of 5052 aluminum, including those that affect the material's strength. Generally speaking, 5052-H32 aluminum is used the most, so here are some basic indicators of the mechanical properties of that specific condition:

shear modulus
Typically about 25.9 GPa (3,760 ksi). This property represents the material's response to torsional or cutting forces.

Elastic Modulus
Typically about 70.3 GPa (10,200 ksi). This number indicates the metal's resistance to deformation by pushing or pulling pressure.

Yield Strength
Typically around 193 MPa (28,000 psi). As mentioned above, this number represents the force required to permanently deform the metal.

Ultimate strength
Typically around 228 MPa (33,000 psi). This number, also called tensile strength, indicates the amount of tension required to break the material.

Shear strength
Typically around 138 MPa (20,000 psi). This number represents the material's resistance to shear forces before failure. 5052 aluminum typically must withstand this stress because it is typically stamped from sheet metal.

Material corrosion resistance
The absence of copper in this alloy makes it more resistant to corrosion in acidic environments, air and water. Corrosion resistance depends on many environmental factors, such as temperature, chemicals in the air and the working environment, but in general, 5052 aluminum has good corrosion resistance.

As with all aluminum alloys, the metal forms an oxide layer in air or water. This layer prevents the aluminum inside from rusting. Another similarity between 5052 aluminum and other alloys is that it may corrode in alkaline soils, although changes in soil composition can significantly affect this property, making it difficult to generalize.

Unlike other copper-containing alloys, this particular alloy is also resistant to salt water corrosion. 5052 aluminum also contains a higher magnesium content, making it more resistant to nitric acid, ammonia, and ammonium hydroxide corrosion. This property makes the alloy ideal for marine and chemical applications. Users of 5052 aluminum can also reduce or eliminate the effects of corrosion by adding a protective coating to the metal.
